Area Rugs

For thousands of years, people have been making, buying, and decorating their homes with rugs. Some of the earliest existing examples of area rugs are 14th Century synagogue prayer mats, and there is evidence that the area rug industry flourished in both Spain and the Middle East for several centuries before increased trade with other countries created a high worldwide demand for beautiful, unique rugs for home decorating purposes.

The first area rugs produced in England, called Norwich rugs for their area of origin, were influenced by Middle Eastern and Spanish rug styles, and soon, custom rug production in that area led to the development of a large rug and textile production industry in Worcestershire, which is still in operation today. With the introduction of the woven carpet mill by William Sprague in 1791, and the invention of the power loom by Erastus Bigelow in 1839, area rug and carpet manufacturing in the United States soon became a successful industry as well.
